What is modern Slavery?

The definition of slavery is "being forced into work without pay under threat of violence and unable to leave". Slavery is not legal in any country in the world yet it is estimated that there is 27 million slaves in the world today. Many people believe that slavery ended when the United States of America made the 13th amendment to the constitution in 1865. But illegal slavery is very popular today and comes in many different forms. Some examples include sex trafficking, child sex trafficking, forced labour, bonded labour or debt bondage, domestic servitude, forced child labour and unlawful recruitment and use of child soldiers. Anti-slavery.org, says that these forms of slavery often come in many different forms themselves for example human trafficking uses money to pay people that comes from other forms of slavery and they all contribute to each other and the enslavement of more people worldwide.

Even though people in poor countries are much more vulnerable to slavery, it can happen to anyone of any age, gender or race. 3rd world countries often have more slavery because of their government and their governments responses to the situation. Fortunately for people in countries like Australia the government is very responsible and has made and enforced laws to stop slavery from happening. But slavery still happens in every country and is very difficult to stop completely as it happens in secret and sometimes on a large scale.

Many people think that slavery ended in the United States on the 13th amendment. But there is lots of slavery still in the world today; in fact it is estimated that there is nearly 30 million slaves worldwide. There are lots of people in the world affected by slavery, and 800,000 people illegally trafficked each year. In 1850 a slave costed the equivalent of 40,000 dollars, but now a slave can cost as little as 90 dollars. Like the 13th amendment slavery needs to be abolished, but on a global scale because people should not be treated like this. First world countries should be doing a lot to stop this problem because it is impacting people everywhere and there are many organizations to educate people and help and stop slavery once and for all. My opinions is quite simple, it shouldn't have ever started. I don't understand how people can ever think about doing the horrible things that they do to others and how they don't have a sense to know what is and what is not inhumane. I also think that it is very important that there are people out there that are people that are putting in the effort to make a difference and solve the problem. My views

Although there are more slaves now than there was before the 13th amendment in 1865 it was a major step towards changing peoples opinions about slavery. When slavery was first introduced into USA it was very popular and not very controversial at all but throughout the years people started to change their minds because of many different reasons. A lot of people disagreed because of their christian beliefs and tried to change the minds of others. These people were called abolitionists and they worked through groups, movements and public newspapers with their view to make it illegal. Even the president wanted to stop it but it was such a large financial asset of the country that they couldn't afford to change until 1865  when the laws were changed for every state in USA to not allow slavery anymore. Although it was over, many slaves faced discrimination and racism and struggled to find jobs or careers. Even today there are still people enslaved in other ways all over the world.

Today a successful end to slavery would cost a huge amount and would effect the global economics and people everywhere. But it would eventually boost the economy of specific countries if they put people into well paying jobs and make the country more attractive to tourists and businesses who could invest in property or create shops and factories. Strict law enforcement would be required to stop modern slavery because a lot of it happens in secret and without the authorities knowing at all.
